How to Maintain Your Sanity During Quarantine

Updated: May 14, 2020

You baked a few banana breads and impressed yourself when they were actually edible. Zoom has become a regular part of your work and personal life. Somehow you've incorporated Tik-Tok into your days and now feel like your dance moves are better than anyone else's. You've adapted to this new quarantine life, but now what?

If you are anything like me, you may find your days filled with some uneasiness, anxiety, and a lot of social media entertainment. We have been home with our kids, significant others, or managing our time solo. We are consuming more snacks than we need and having more vino than we ever should! You are not alone. Most of us are trying to find the balance that will give us a little sense of normalcy. Follow along to maintain your sanity until we get back into the real world.

1. Create a Stay At Home Routine and Stick to It

Create a routine that works for you. Don't worry about following what everyone else is doing. Only you know what will work best in your household. It is important to create consistency in order to balance your days. I recommend setting an alarm to wake you up even if you aren't currently working. Oversleeping will interfere with your sleep pattern at night which will form bad sleeping habits. These habits will be harder to break once we are out of quarantine.

2. Get A Daily Dose of Fresh Air

Let's face it, we have to stay home! However, our bodies also need sunlight. The sun provides us with an excellent source of Vitamin D, which is essential to our body. Fifteen minutes of sun is all you need daily. I usually like to go to my front porch and clear my head as I take in a little sun. If you live in an apartment, don't be afraid to get your ray of sunshine from a window. I have recently incorporated daily walks around my neighborhood, which keeps me active and balanced.

3. Learn Something New

Have you always wanted to excel at making your Grandmother's rice, learn to trim your beard, or enhance your makeup skills? Well, why not now? I have learned to make numerous face masks, tried new recipes, and joined several workout sessions. They have kept me entertained while teaching me a few new skills. Read a book, pick up a new hobby or reinvent an old one. In other words, stimulate your brain!

4. Look Presentable

Try to do this for at least 4 out of the 7 days of the week. When we stay in our pajamas and don't brush our hair, we tend to not be productive. Yes, I know it feels good to be cozy and comfortable. But comfortable and cute will feel even better!

5. Take Care of YOU

Certainly, many of us are feeling overwhelmed. It's easy to abandon our bodies during this time because we are stressed. However, maintaining our health is the greatest gift that we can give to ourselves. Be sure to incorporate healthy foods into your diet and drink plenty of water. Try to stay active as much as you can; it will feed your body and your mind. Lastly, it is normal to feel sad during this time but if the feeling is constant and not allowing you to perform your normal tasks, please seek professional help. Let's remember to check in on each other as we go through these unnerving times. We will get through this!
